Long?term proliferation of large annual thistles in dry Mediterranean rangelands

چکیده

Spiny plants comprise a large, ecologically and economically important functional group in Mediterranean rangelands. The increasing abundance of large annual thistles grazed grasslands entails major consequences for ecosystem services. This study aims to quantify the contribution spiny rangeland vegetation cover productivity identify management- climate-related drivers plant distribution performance. Using 15-year dataset from an extensive herbaceous pasture experiment northeastern Galilee, Israel, we examined effects livestock management climate on biomass two dominant thistle species, Scolymus maculatus Carthamus glaucus. These constitute significant proportion productivity, contributing more than 50% 25% under high moderate stocking density, respectively. Despite similarity life-form life-history characteristics, each demonstrates distinct response both intensity climatic parameters. High density had positive effect S. maculatus. Conversely, C. glaucus estimates were higher density. Distance feeding site contrasting focal thistles. Relative humidity temperature most sensitive parameters explaining variation directionality species' responses suggests that attains dry warm conditions. proliferation variable densities conditions increases but reduces palatable rangelands by 27%–50%.

From desert to Mediterranean rangelands: will increasing drought and inter-annual rainfall variability affect herbaceous annual primary productivity?

Climate change is predicted to alter the rainfall regime in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin: total annual rainfall will decrease, while seasonal and inter-annual variation in rainfall will increase. Such changes in the rainfall regime could potentially lead to large-scale changes in aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in the region. We conducted a data-driven evaluation of herbaceous ANP...

Seasonal Variation of Chemical Composition and Dry Matter Digestibility of Rangelands in Nw Greece

This study was carried out to determine the chemical composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility of grazable material, during the growing season of plants, in three different altitudinal zones, in native rangelands, northwestern Greece. Samples were collected during the period from May to October of the years 2004 and 2005. Sample collection was accomplished by cutting aboveground biomass...

Degradation of terpenes and terpenoids from Mediterranean rangelands by mixed rumen bacteria in vitro.

This in vitro study aimed at estimating the disappearance rates of 14 terpenes and terpenoids after 24-h incubation with mixed bacteria from caprine rumens. These compounds comprised nine monoterpene hydrocarbons (δ-3-carene, p-cymene, β-myrcene, (E)- and (Z)-β-ocimene, α-phellandrene, α-terpinene, γ-terpinene and α-terpinolene), four oxygenated monoterpenes ((E)- and (Z)-linalool oxide, 4-terp...
